Under his leadership, the National Library of South Africa (NLSA) has embraced digital technologies, significantly enhancing access to collections and services, especially crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic. The global audience participation filled the chat with congratulations and emojis, demonstrating the support and admiration for Mr. Kepi Madumo.
The Interview
Mr. Madumo’s career in librarianship, spanning over two decades, began with his role as Director of Library Services in the North-Western Province of South Africa. His leadership journey is marked by significant milestones, including his election as chairperson of the forum of heads of provincial libraries in the country. He excelled in subsequent library positions and upskilled to become the National Librarian & CEO of the National Library, South Africa.
During the interview, Mr. Madumo highlighted initiatives such as the significant investment in digital infrastructure funded by the Presidential Employment Stimulus. This initiative preserved cultural heritage, provided employment, and training opportunities for library and information science graduates. His efforts in fostering collaborations with governmental and non-governmental sectors have been pivotal in enhancing the library’s resources and expanding its reach, solidifying its role as a cornerstone of knowledge and culture in South Africa.
Liver participants were given opportunity to engage Mr. Madumo. In one of his response, Mr. Madumo noted that in partnership with the International Federation of Library Associations, IFLA, the National Library of South Africa capacitates libraries and librarians in regions where equipment for collections preservation is not available, providing them with necessary training and facilities.
Mr. Kepi Madumo emphasized the importance of persistent advocacy and raising national awareness about the important roles libraries play in society, especially in regions where government support is insufficient. He encouraged aspiring young librarians and LIS students to invest in themselves, seek internships or part-time positions in libraries, embrace technology, and build connections with professionals in the field.

The highlight of the event was the introduction of a surprise guest, Mr. Na’angap Daship, who commended Mr. Kepi Madumo for his mentorship and leadership qualities and announced him as Librarian of the Month, presenting a Digital Certificate and Plaque.
